Trump! Listen to wise 89-year-old grandmothers who know about these things

I just read an article in The Washington Post where a Pennsylvania woman, a longtime staunch supporter of Donald Trump, after watching the vice presidential debate the night before, woke up at 5 a.m. and penned a four-page letter to the so-called billionaire urging him to temper his urge to stray from the real issues of the campaign.

She instead urged him to focus on what is right about America.

In her letter, she told Trump that it was “obvious” that he could easily lose this election.

The 89-year-old grandmother urged Trump to release his tax returns, ignore the controversies that she says Hillary Clinton tries to start, stop tweeting at 3 a.m., and above all stay away from Bill Clinton. After all, she said, he’s not running for president. We’re not sure what this very wise grandmother thinks now, particularly after this past weekend’s avalanche of news coverage highlighting Trump’s “locker room banter” on that well-known citadel of journalism, “Access Hollywood.”

Donald Trump’s and Billy Bush’s ugly and embarrassing bus banter set the political world on fire and exacerbated his already thin hopes of sitting in the Oval Office come January 20, 2017.

Who won Sunday's Debate?

This woman strongly urged the headstrong, narcissistic candidate to tell voters how he plans to improve the country instead of lurking about in the wee hours of the morning sending ugly tweets to everyone from Pope Francis to Republican House Leader Paul Ryan.

We believe that to be very good advice and that Trump should listen. One should always heed the helpful and wise advice of any 89-year-old grandmother. But will he? Probably not. In fact, we think he’ll continue his early-morning tweeting, refuse to release his tax returns (because he’s afraid to), and continue beating up on the nearly 20-year-old Clinton story. At some point in the next 27 days he may bring up an issue important to American voters.

But sadly, instead, on Tuesday he stormed the Twitter world with more tweets:

Why beat up on Clinton? Remember when then-President Clinton, in the throes of 1998 impeachment proceedings, actually enjoyed a 70 percent approval rating. Contrast that to 2008, when President George W. Bush left office. His approval ratings were an abysmal 22 percent (per the CBS News/New York Times poll).

Mr. Trump has been told many times by friends, advisors and wise grandmothers that Bill Clinton is not running for president. He needs to remember that. Much of the American public still likes the guy – despite his dark past with women.

If Donald Trump thinks he has a chance to become president (I don’t think he does) it would be wise to stop with the tweets, focus on the issues, and stop with the stupid stuff. I don’t think there’s any doubt that due to the political nature of Kings County, Trump will do well here. He will probably get more votes than Ms. Clinton. Fortunately for Clinton, Kings County’s voters don’t much align themselves with the rest of the state’s progressive, often liberal population.

I could obviously go through a litany of Trumpisms, including his propensity to avoid the truth, and cite facts (his aversion to both are plainly evident in a mountain of evidence), but by now it’s evident that the Republican presidential nominee is in a world unto himself, and that world (and his vision of it) rests all alone in the deep recesses of his mind.

Please Donald, listen to wise grandmothers.
