When Dr. Frank Gornick delivered his first address at West Hills College in Jan. of 1994, he used an overhead projector and addressed somewhere around three rows of staff, faculty and administrators in the West Hills College Coalinga theater.

On Jan. 13, 2017—23 years later—he addressed a packed theater full of educators and staff from two campuses and centers spanning the San Joaquin Valley for the last time as Chancellor of the West Hills Community College District.

Gornick delivered his last State of the District address—outlining the work of the West Hills Community College District in 2016 and the projects and initiatives planned for 2017— before he retires in June and looked back on his two decades as Chancellor.

“I want to give a big thank you to the people who saw what we wanted to do in this district over the years and stepped up,” he said. “Back in 1994, you decided you were willing to trust me. I can’t say thank you enough.”

In his address, Gornick highlighted what 2017 has in store for WHCCD, including an accreditation visit for both colleges from March 6 to 9.

WHCCD will continue to focus on year-round registration with its Reg365 program and work toward simplifying registration and degree attainment for students through meta-majors, student self-service and increased online course offerings.

Gornick also discussed the district’s dedication to working adult and older learners, including finding ways to help students who might be coming back to education after previous attempts.

Another ongoing focus of the WHCCD will be on online initiatives including moving toward the adoption of online textbooks, fully online classes and a redesigned and mobile friendly website.

He also welcomed new staff, administration and faculty members, including new West Hills College Coalinga President Brenda Thames, who will start in that position on Feb. 1.

“We’re going different places, good places,” he said of the future of the WHCCD.

Gornick will retire on June 30. Dr. Stuart Van Horn will officially begin his duties as Chancellor on July 1.
