Democrats, with their latest win, tied the overall series – which began in 1909 – at 42-42-1. Cox played outfield for the Democrats and managed to hit a single. He attended every morning practice and built long-lasting relationships with his teammates and the Republicans they played.
Cox, who represents many communities in his Central Valley district, proudly wore his Lemoore Tigers uniform during the game, but apparently, he found the time to change jerseys during the game. He also wore jerseys from Kingsburg, Avenal, and Wasco.
The annual game is played for several charities, including Washington’s Boys and Girls club, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, the Washington Literacy Center, and after the 2017 shooting, the U.S. Capitol Police Memorial Fund.
The Democrats won inaugural 1909 game 26-16, but the longest winning streak (10 years) was from 1964-74.
