It was an exceptional service for a special man. They call it his last call, his final patrol, and men and women in uniform, representing law enforcement agencies from throughout California, came to Lemoore to honor Lemoore Police Officer Jonathan Diaz.

Police officers, sheriff’s deputies, California Highway Patrol officers, and others, representing law enforcement from throughout the state, arrived in Lemoore in police cruisers and on their motorcycles, to honor one of Lemoore’s finest, this young man – only 31 years old – who represents the best that the law enforcement profession has to offer.

The community paid its respects, as did family members, councilmembers, and former mayors, law enforcement officers, police chiefs, and of course, friends. St. Peter’s Church, a rather large venue, managed to accommodate all those who came from near and far to pay their respects to this brave young man.

Even California Governor Gavin Newsom came to Lemoore to honor the memory of Diaz, who died doing what he was trained to do – protect people.

“This support is overwhelming,” said Lemoore Police Chief Michael Kendall, who delivered brief but meaningful remarks as to Diaz’s spotless record while serving as a Lemoore police officer. “Jonathan received many letters of commendation. He proved himself in his job.”

He reminded his audience that Diaz was a dedicated police officer, so much so that he was appointed to the Kings County Major Crimes Task Force.  “He was always there when you needed him,” said Kendall.

Following Kendall’s eulogy, a recorded voice filled St. Peter’s Church. It cited his “end of watch” and the voice, echoing the thoughts of his fellow law enforcement officers, thanked him for his “loyalty and dedication” to the citizens of Lemoore.

“Officer Diaz, you will never be forgotten.”

The funeral procession then proceeded to Lemoore’s Sunflower Cemetery, where Officer Diaz was interred. A memorial luncheon followed at the Lemoore Community Center at 711 West Cinnamon Avenue.

Friends of Diaz ask that those who want to can share their memories or condolences by visiting www.chapelofthelight.com on the Officer Jonathan Diaz Memorial Page.

A Hero's Welcome

By Robert Langley

Time to come home dear brother

Your tour of duty through

You've given as much as anyone

Could be expected to do

Just a few steps further

The smoke will start to clear

Others here will guide you

You have no need of fear

You have not failed your brothers

You clearly gave it all

And through your selfless actions

Others will hear the call

So take your place of honor

Among those who have gone before

And know you will be remembered

For now and evermore
