The Kings County Department of Public Health (KCDPH) Monday night confirmed 42 additional cases of the Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), while earlier in the day, health care workers administered free COVID-19 tests to 34 persons attending the Hanford Flea Market.

The health department set up shot in Alma’s Flea Market parking lot on Monday morning, and testing began at 8 a.m. and continued until 2 p.m. or until 150 patients were tested. However, according to Kings health officials, only 34 persons volunteered for testing. Edward Hill, the director of the Kings County Department of Public Health, was on the scene while Michelle Mora, an LVN II/DIS, administered the tests.

Hill said that results are normally returned in 24 to 96 hours. 

KCDPH has determined that 36 of the new cases reported Monday contracted the disease through close contact with a confirmed case. The exposure of the additional six remaining new cases is still under investigation, said health officials. Of the total active cases, 12 are being treated in isolation, and all other cases have been quarantined.

KCDPH is currently conducting communicable disease investigations to identify any persons who may have had close personal contact with these individuals, including any friends, family members, or health care professionals, to assess and monitor them for signs and symptoms of illness. Due to privacy laws, no specific information regarding any of the 689 cases can be shared with the public.

As of May 25, California health officials report that the state now has 94,558 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,795 deaths. Local health departments also note that as of May 24, their departments have reported 9,328 confirmed positive cases in health care workers and 50 deaths statewide. More than 1,644,102 tests have been given in California.
