County health officials report fourth COVID-19 death; nine of 11 new cases from prisons

A fourth Kings County citizen has died from the Coronavirus (COVID-19) stated Kings County Department of Public Health officials (KCDPH). The health department, in a release, said the patient’s exposure is under investigation, and the person was between the ages of 50 and 64 years old.

While Kings County mourns four deaths, as of Saturday, May 30, California health officials report 4,156 fatalities and 106,878 confirmed cases statewide as businesses slowly begin to reopen.

“The County extends our deepest sympathies to the loved ones during this time of loss,” said Edward Hill, Director of Kings County Department of Public Health. “COVID-19 impacts people of all ages, which is why we’re so concerned with the age of this individual. We continue to urge people to practice social distancing, stay away from those who are ill, and wear face coverings.”

Kings County officials confirmed 11 new cases and reported that nine of those individuals could be connected to Kings County’s two prisons. The KCDPH confirmed that nine of the new cases contracted the disease through close contact with a confirmed case. The remaining two cases are under investigation.

The severity of the prisons’ outbreak (246 cases) and an earlier flare-up at a Hanford meatpacking facility that sickened approximately 120 Kings County citizens make up nearly half of the county’s 746 coronavirus patients as of Sunday, May 31.

Of all cases, say county health care officials, 15 are currently under treatment in isolation, and all other cases have been quarantined.

The following list depicts the current situation in Kings County:

Total Kings County Cases: 500

Total Cases Associated to State Operated Correctional Facilities in Kings County: 246

Total Deaths: 4

Recovered: 294

KCDPH is currently conducting communicable disease investigations to identify any persons who may have had close personal contact with these individuals, including any friends, family members, or health care professionals, to assess and monitor them for signs and symptoms of illness.
