According to California’s Department of Corrections, there are currently 2,419 inmates with active cases of coronavirus. Avenal State Prison, as of June 9 had 669 active cases. Prison officials confirm 165 inmates have recovered, and there have been no deaths.
Corcoran State Prison currently has 93 active cases and no fatalities. However, statewide corrections officials have reported 12 deaths.
Avenal also reported 52 staff members with COVID-19. So far 17 have returned to work. Corcoran reported 10 staff having caught the virus.
KCDPH has determined that 48 of the new cases contracted the disease through close contact with a confirmed case. The exposure of the additional 22 remaining new cases is still under investigation. Of the total active cases, 25 are being treated in isolation, and all other cases have been quarantined. KCDPH has also identified 29 previously identified cases that have fully recovered from the disease.

KCDPH is currently conducting communicable disease investigations to identify any persons who may have had close personal contact with these individuals, including any friends, family members, or health care professionals, to assess and monitor them for signs and symptoms of illness. Due to privacy laws, no specific information regarding any of the 1,637 cases can be shared with the public.
