The positive samples were collected in the northern half of Kings County, near the Cities of Lemoore and Hanford.

West Nile virus is commonly detected in mosquito samples in July and August and usually continues into September.  Although no human cases have been reported in Kings County, the District strongly recommends people take the appropriate precautions when mosquitoes are active- usually at dawn and dusk.

By following these few steps, residents can help prevent mosquito breeding and guard against mosquito-transmitted illnesses:

• Protect yourself against mosquito bites by using an EPA registered mosquito repellent with an effective ingredient such as Deet, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
• Prevent mosquito breeding by ensuring pools and spas are properly maintained, emptying containers that hold water, and making sure outdoor faucets are not leaking.
• Prepare your home- make sure window screens and screen doors are in good repair.
