The measure is slated for the Nov. 5 general election and asks voters to approve a measure for essential services, including maintaining a clean, safe community with services such as 911 emergency response, police patrols, fire services, street and crosswalk repair, park and recreation programs, and to retain and attract businesses.
The measure proposes a one-cent increase in the local sales tax rate that local leaders hope will address a recent revenue decline and ensure the continuation of essential services.
The additional revenue will fund critical city functions, including fire protection, paramedic services, and 911 emergency response.
It will also support natural disaster preparedness, street and infrastructure repair, and maintenance for parks and recreation.
In addition, increased revenues will help contribute to the sustainability of local jobs and small businesses.
All five council members, Mayor Patricia Matthews, Frank Gornick, Stuart Lyons, David Orth, and Johnny Garza, voted to approve the measure.
