The winning high jumper was Eric Moore, an athlete from Rialto who cleared 7-0. Burke tied with several other athletes for fourth when he cleared 6-8.
“He definitely will be a champion next year,” said Tiger Coach Kelly Brown who has watched Burke’s progress the last three years. “He nearly cleared 7-0 earlier this year.”
He has cleared 6-10 earlier this year so was considered a legitimate contender in the State Meet. He won the West Yosemite League high jump championship and finished second in the Valley Meet tying the eventual winner, but getting second on the number of misses.
“He has the potential, drive and inspiration to be a champion,” said Brown. “He’s an exceptional person.”
Burke almost qualified for the triple jump as well, but finished fourth in the Valley meet.
