NAS Lemoore Search and Rescue airlifts four skiers to safety in Moro County

By The Leader Staff

Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore Search and Rescue (SAR) Detachment responded to a call from the Moro County Sheriff’s Office to airlift four skiers to safety, Sunday night, February 12. The 6 p.m. call to NAS Lemoore was a “last resort” for the civilian authorities.

A helicopter and crew from NAS Lemoore hiked the four skiers, one injured, to the helicopter where they were delivered to Moro County Command Post before being transported to a hospital. A ground crew from Moro County Sheriff’s office was already on station nearby at the time the SAR chopper from NAS Lemoore arrived.

The skiers were located approximately two miles within the Moro Lake vicinity at an elevation more than 9,000 feet.

The SAR was on scene by 7:40 p.m. Sunday and had completed the mission by approximately 11:30 p.m.

“We bring a special capability to the squadrons here at NAS Lemoore, but when the need arises, we are ready to help civilian authorities out,” said SAR Detachment Officer-in-Charge Matthew Berger. “We are part of this community and are glad we could be of assistance.”
