Ed Martin is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where he graduated in 1981 with a BS in Journalism. He arrived in Lemoore on October 1, 1981 to begin a job as an assistant editor of The Lemoore Leader, a weekly newspaper owned by Keith and Laura Shannon.
In 1983 he stepped up into the editor's position and remained there for several years until The Lemoore Leader was absorbed into The Lemoore Advance, Lemoore's other weekly.
While teaching full time and working at The Leader, and later The Advance, Martin earned a teaching credential and Masters Degree. He also served as a sports writer and editor for The Advance, but finally left in 1991.
After serving a term as the Lemoore Recreation Department Commission's first chairman, Martin was elected to the first of five terms on the Lemoore City Council. Following 18 years on the Council he retired in 2008. During his tenure Martin served four consecutive terms (eight years) as Mayor.
He has been employed at Lemoore High School since 1987 as an English teacher and recently retired an administrator at the local high school.
Martin also was a long time member of the Lemoore Rotary Club, serving two terms as its president. He is also a member of the Lemoore Odd Fellows organization and was one of the founders of the Lemoore Union High School District Foundation for Educational Excellence. He served as its president for four years.
In 2001 Martin was honored by the Lemoore Chamber of Commerce as its Citizen of the Year.
Martin has for several years been disappointed by the lack of news coverage afforded Lemoore and its surrounding communities. There was an era in the not so distant past when Lemoore citizens were treated to two weekly newspapers. The community deserves better than what it has received for the past decade or two.
It is the goal of The Leader to better inform the citizens as to the news and happenings of Lemoore. Our community is a vibrant, thriving city that is only getting bigger and better as the years go by. We have good schools, we can safely walk the streets at night, and we have created what I think is a modern, comfortable community that is the pride of the Valley.
