The Adventist Health/Central Valley Network welcomes Dr. Dabi Gurmu to JobCare in Hanford and Reedley. Gurmu practices occupational medicine; helping with work-related injuries, pre-employment physicals, Department of Transportation physicals and more.

“Many people may not realize it, but occupational medicine isn’t just about treating injuries,” says Gurmu. “It’s also preventative medicine because you can show people how to prevent injuries and live a healthy lifestyle.”

Gurmu enjoys the whole-person care aspect, which is what attracted him to Adventist Health.

When he was a child, growing up in Ethiopia, he was sick a lot. “I almost died,” says Gurmu. “I was unconscious for a couple of months. No one knew what was wrong with me, but when I woke up, I wanted to go to school.” That experience made an impression on Gurmu and prompted him to go into medicine to help make a difference in people’s lives.

He graduated from Vitebsk Medical School in Vitebsk, Belaurs and completed an internship in general surgery at University Southern California in Los Angeles and residency training in Occupational Medicine at Loma Linda University, where he also earned a Master of Public Health. Gurmu is also certified with the American Board of Preventive Medicine.

He’s been practicing medicine since 1989. Most recently, he was caring for patients at an occupational medical center in Redding, Calif. He chose to move to the Central Valley because it reminds him of the farm, where he grew up in Ethiopia.

Gurmu is fluent in English, Spanish and Russian
