A new wave of Discover Healthcare students has arrived at Adventist Health and the number is increasing every year! This summer, 110 students were accepted into the eight-week program, compared to 80 in 2016.

The program gives high school and college students from across the Central Valley hands-on experience in the medical field.

On June 28, Dr. Michael Brook, with the Adventist Health Spine and Pain Center, spoke to a group of 60 students about anesthesia and pain management. The students also get to volunteer in Adventist Health medical centers in Hanford, Selma and Reedley, as well as other departments that are of interest to them.

“Volunteering at the Birth Center in Hanford has really confirmed what I’d like to do in the future,” says Ashlyn Paden, a first year Discover Healthcare student from Visalia. Paden hopes to become a pediatric nurse practitioner and is currently enjoying working around babies and learning from the staff. “They are really friendly and open about how long a career in nursing would take and what it would be like,” she says.

The program kicked off on June 13, and graduation is slated for Aug. 2.
