Have you ever wanted to grow a garden with delicious fruits or vegetables, but don’t have space or resources? Adventist Health’s Greenfield Community Garden is the perfect solution!
The community garden, since early 2012, sits on an 80-by-200-foot stretch of land on Greenfield Avenue, near Lacey Boulevard in Hanford. The annual fee for the upcoming winter and summer season is $36 and goes to the Central Valley Health Foundation to cover expenses to maintain the garden (water bills, soil, supplies, etc.).
A community garden is a great place where people can interact with other members of the community, learn gardening techniques and cultivate nutritious, locally grown produce.
“The people in this garden come from a wide variety of backgrounds,” says one plot owner. “We have apartment dwellers, homeowners, retired people, kids who come with their parents, and so it’s a great place to meet people and trade information about gardening and about the community. I think it’s a great resource.”
The garden features a greenhouse, 30 octagon-shaped planting beds, water-head in every planting bed and a tool shed (tools are not provided, but can be stored on site). Any one person can rent more than one plot, and the plots vary in size.
To start your garden before winter arrives, fill out an application form at this link: http://bit.ly/2wfoXPU. Grants are also available to help, those who qualify, cover the fee. For more information, please contact CVNGreenfieldGarden@ah.org or call Diana Torres at 559-856-6940.
