Locals gather in Kings Lions Park to honor 'Gold Star' families in inspiring event
According to those in attendance, the ceremony was emotional and inspiring as approximately 50 persons joined Salas to honor Gold Star families. They also heard remarks from the Verbeek family who spoke about their son Jared, and they also heard from Julian Bond who talked about what being a hero means.
The event was held at the Waggin’ Tails Dog Park located at the Kings Lions Park Complex in Lemoore from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Salas joined Assemblyman Dante Acosta as authors of legislation honoring Gold Star mothers and families. The event is held on the last Sunday in September.
It was indeed a moving ceremony as approximately 50 persons showed up at Lions Park to plant a tree honoring Gold Star Families. The term “Gold Star” describes a family member who has lost a loved one in military service. The Gold Star made its first appearance during World War I after being placed over a service flag’s blue star when a service member was killed in combat.
