Another Lemoore High School grad – among many over the decades – may soon find himself among the ranks of the United States Naval Academy midshipmen come the summer of 2019.

William Wilkens, a talented and industrious senior at the local high school, received word this week that he has been recommended for admission to the United States Naval Academy with the Class of 2023, one of many students over the years from Lemoore High to earn a prestigious Naval Academy appointment.

Wilkens, who was nominated by his congressman, was informed by letter this week of his acceptance to the Naval Academy. His appointment comes after months of meetings and interviews, including a roundtable of former military academy grads, including at least one from the Naval Academy.

Wilkens also happens to be a ranking cadet – a four-year member – with the Lemoore High School NJROTC, so wearing a uniform is nothing new to him. The 18-year-old Cadet Lieutenant is the Lemoore unit’s assistant administrative officer, and recently was one of the best marksmen in the country. Recently, while shooting at the NJROTC Air Rifle National Championships in Anniston, Alabama, the talented shooter finished 43rd overall out of 225 of the country’s top NJROTC marksmen.

Wilkins is the son of Duane and  Sheila Wilkins. He also has three brothers and two sisters. The Navy-bound senior is no lightweight when it comes to the books. He currently carries a 4.29 GPA, was a member of the school’s marching band his freshman year and has served in choir since his sophomore year. He was the French Club vice president this year, and while with NJROTC he has served on the drill team, physical fitness and academic teams.

Why the Naval Academy?

“I was kind of inspired by some of my friends who have gone there,” he recalled. “They brought it to my attention. Before then I didn’t even know it really existed. But I did some research, learned about its amazing education programs and its ability to forge leaders.” He rapidly became a believer and sought a nomination.

“I really set my sights on it,” he said. “I have for a while wanted to go into the service. Growing up in a military town my grandfathers were in the military, my older brother is in the military, and it just inspired me to go into the service to serve.”

Wilkens intends to major in aerospace engineering and would like to serve as a Navy pilot or an engineer.

Wilkins gets high praise from his superiors. “William is a four-year Lemoore High School NJROTC student who consistently demonstrates phenomenal dedication and sustained superior performance in every endeavor he is involved in,” said the unit’s commander, Lt. Cmdr. John Wolstenholme.  “He is completely dedicated and driven to succeed, and he routinely displays the leadership and character traits the Naval Academy desires.  He is currently ranked 10th of 397 Seniors, and he consistently maintains an impressive 4.29 GPA.”
