A cadre of City of Lemoore officials – including the city’s manager – just happened to be on hand at  Monday morning’s (May 24) grand opening for Lemoore’s latest cannabis enterprise, a facility that in due course will not only grow cannabis – lots of it eventually – but manufacture cannabis products and deliver them throughout much of the Central Valley.

California Cannabis is located in the city’s burgeoning industrial park on the south side of Highway 198. It has already started growing cannabis as the company plans to build additional growing facilities.

City officials seem to be quite pleased with the newest addition to Lemoore’s ever-growing industrial center. And, according to Lemoore City Manager Nathan Olson, California Cannabis will add to the city’s bottom line, eventually helping to erase a bothersome budget deficit.

California is the third cannabis business to open up shop in Lemoore. Last summer, a pair of dispensaries – Valley Pure and Natural Healing Center - opened downtown and so far seem to be attracting a healthy percentage of the cannabis-purchasing public.

According to Olson, the city’s budget woes are already being assisted by an influx of cannabis tax revenues from both dispensaries. Olson told The Leader that the two dispensaries since they opened last summer, have contributed about $700,000 to the city’s general budget.

“It all goes into the general fund,” said Olson.  “We will still be in deficit spending this year, but by next year we hope to be in the black.”

Good news finally, particularly after a disastrous 2020-21 in which communities statewide felt the brunt of the pandemic, watching tax revenues fall as the death tolls went up.

California Cannabis is happy to be here too. Chief Executive Officer David Moeck, speaking to a small gathering of visitors, including the press, city officials, and the local chamber of commerce, said his team is happy that Lemoore city officials approved their business early last year, calling it a partnership.

“We’re looking forward to that partnership with a lot of good folks coming in to help us with the local labor force, and when you look at Lemoore, there’s manufacturing here already,” said Moeck, standing in a cul-de-sac as workers continue to work on a variety of buildings. He pointed out a new 25,000 square foot manufacturing building.

“That 25,000 square-foot building is going to be home to manufactured products from all over the state. People are going to end up flocking here to have us help them manufacture their products,” he continued.

Moeck predicted that Lemoore would benefit greatly from the new cannabis business. “Lemoore is going to be known as one of the most friendly cannabis centers in the state.”

California Cannabis is looking forward to new growth and a solid partnership with the local government.

“We’re looking forward to that partnership with a lot of good folks coming in to help us with the local labor force, and when you look at Lemoore, there’s manufacturing here already,” Moeck told The Leader.

While some greenhouses are up and running, there is still a lot of work to do. “People are going to end up flocking here to have us help them manufacture their products,” continued Moeck.

Thanks to a 10,000 square-foot facility that is up and running, California Cannabis officials say California Cannabis will harvest its first crop on August 1. A pair of planned greenhouses should be completed in late June and July. Moeck also expects his company to begin construction in September or October of another 40,000 square feet.

“Lemoore has a great community, a great city council, and they’ve made it an easy place to do business,” said Moeck. “There are a lot of places in the state that are prohibitive. They look at cannabis as something that (had) a bit of a mystique to it that they can take advantage of, and they can make onerous regulations. Lemoore is not doing that. Lemoore is fair. Lemoore is safe,” said Moeck.
