Local aviation organization donates $2,000 to aviator memorial at NAS Lemoore

The San Joaquin Valley Squadron of the Association of Naval Aviation, based in Lemoore, has donated $2,000 toward the effort to build a memorial for local fighter pilots who died in the line of duty.

The donation will help the efforts of two Naval aviators, Lt. Cmdr. Ben Charles and Lt. Cmdr. Erik Kenny, who are spearheading their idea to build the memorial.
Groundbreaking for the project will be Tuesday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the base's observation deck parking lot, the location of the memorial.

The focal point, and primary expense, will be seven-foot bronze statue depicting a pilot holding his helmet and looking out over the runways. The project is expected to cost $50,000.

"We are pleased to honor those who serve our country and who have served our country with such dignity and patriotism," said retired U.S. Navy Capt. Leonard Giuliani, the president of the association's local chapter. The ANA is a group of retired Navy leaders and supporters who fund scholarships and community work.
Individual contributions also may be made.
