West Hills College Foundation announces scholarships available to students
West Hills College Coalinga, West Hills College Lemoore and the North District Center, Firebaugh, all have scholarships available for the 2015-2016 academic year. Some scholarships are campus specific, but several are offered district wide.
The largest district-wide scholarship is the President’s Scholar Program, which is offered to high school seniors with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher and four semesters of California Scholarship Federation eligibility. Included is free tuition for two years and $250 per semester for books and priority registration. Further eligibility requirements are found on the application. All eligible students who apply will receive the scholarship. Last fall, 112 students enrolled at West Hills as a President’s Scholar.
Another significant scholarship for the district is the Bernard Osher Scholarship. There are 32 of these in amounts of up to $1,000 each. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have completed at least 24 units applicable to their degree.
Scholarship descriptions and instructions for applying are listed on the Foundation webpage: www.westhillscollege.com/district/foundation/scholarships. Applications can be downloaded from the website and must be submitted prior to March 1 for consideration.
A number of new scholarships are available this year including the Mouren Family Endowed Scholarship that was established in honor of Howard Mouren, whose family pioneered farming in the Coalinga/Huron area. That $1,000 scholarship is available to a student majoring in agriculture at West Hills College Coalinga.
At West Hills College Lemoore, students majoring in engineering are eligible for free tuition and $600 a semester for books for up to 70 units.
A number of scholarships are also available for veterans including three Ed Marco Veteran’s Scholarships at $1,200 per year each.
