West Hills College and Corcoran Foundations team up for scholarships

Free college tuition will be a reality for some of this year’s Corcoran High School graduates thanks to a new scholarship offered by the Corcoran Community Foundation and the West Hills Community College Foundation.

The Corcoran Promise scholarship will be awarded to Corcoran High School graduates and will pay for their first year at West Hills College with the goal of encouraging college completion and student success.

“We know that more and more jobs in the future will require completion of college or advanced vocational training,” said Corcoran Community Foundation President Mary Wadsworth.  “Helping with their financial resources that first year may give them just the push and incentive needed to succeed.”

Scholarship applications must be received by Friday, July 15. There is no grade point average requirement for the scholarship and it can be used to attend West Hills College Coalinga, West Hills College Lemoore, North District Center, Firebaugh or to take online classes through West Hills.

Scholarship recipients will need to commit to enroll in 15 or more units each semester and complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid or Dream Act application. They will also be expected to conduct community service in Corcoran each semester.

The scholarship is part of a wide range of community initiatives from West Hills College aimed at helping local students afford college.

Frances Squire, executive director of the West Hills Community College Foundation, said that generous donors like the Corcoran Community Foundation are making a difference in the lives of area students.

“Those students, in turn, will make a difference in our region,” she said. “Everyone wins.”
