Measure K: A noble effort that needs to be tried again soon

Kudos to the backers and organizers of Kings County’s Measure K effort. They nearly pulled it off, and if there are enough provisional ballots left, who knows, they just might put the local public safety measure over the top.

As it is, as of 5:49 a.m. on Wednesday morning, it was agonizingly short of the magic 66.66 percent needed to pass, a two-thirds requirement, a somewhat artificial figure about which I’ve always had reservations.

Majority rules? Not apparently when it comes to specific taxes.

I can only urge local and county leaders to try again, because providing local funds for public safety is a must. Sometimes we simply have to take matters into our own hands, as we’ve done with education – hence West Hills College Lemoore, funded in part due to the generosity of local residents.

One of the primary responsibilities of government is to protect its citizens, and it does that with police and fire departments, deputy sheriffs, the U.S. Navy. It is incumbent upon all citizens to provide the resources to make their job a little easier and a lot more efficient.

We should try this again, maybe in November.
