High school, college students take part in hospital emergency preparedness drill

“This is a drill, and only a drill,” will be the words that spark students from the Discover Healthcare program to leap into action on Wednesday, June 29. The high school and college students enrolled in the Adventist Health summer program will take part in a mock Emergency Preparedness Decontamination Drill at Adventist Medical Center – Hanford.

“We want our volunteers to experience how hospital staff from various departments work together to address a real life emergency,” says Tanya Hutchison, Director of Volunteer Resources for Adventist Health / Central Valley Network.

“This is hands-on training, so students will work closely with the Hanford Fire Department and hospital employees in setting up decontamination showers and tents and coordinating with the media.”

The mock drill will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. Hospital staff and patients will be alerted of the drill in advance. Students will then receive extra education from 2-4:30 p.m.
