City Council to consider changes to Lemoore Rec Commission membership

By Ed Martin, Editor

Lemoore councilmembers, at their Tuesday night (Nov. 1) meeting will consider reducing the number of recreation commission members from seven to five and officially change the recreation commission’s name to the Lemoore Parks and Recreation Commission.

Currently there are seven members that served on the recreation commission that was chartered in 1987. Currently seven members serve two-year terms. Parks and Recreation Director Jason Glick stated that an ordinance was never established for the commission that outlined rules and regulations for the commission and city staff.

Glick, in a report to councilmembers, proposes that an ordinance modify the name from the Lemoore Recreation Commission to the Lemoore Parks and Recreation Commission. Another change he’s requesting is that the number of appointed commissioners be reduced from seven to five, equaling the number that sit as councilmembers.

Glick stated that the new ordinance’s purpose is rooted in the historical difficulties with the attendance of all seven members as well as recruiting new commission members. “Ultimately,” he stated, “the absence of the members slows down the decision-making process.”

He said that five of the seven current members’ terms end on December 31, 2016 so no current sitting member will be affected by a reduction in the number of members.

He is also recommending terms be reduced from four years to two years and the meeting times be changed to six times per year. The meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. at Lemoore City Hall.

“This will allow City staff an opportunity to build agenda items and allow full-time hourly staff to attend the meetings,” stated Glick.

Since July of 2016, the Recreation Commission has been meeting bi-monthly at 5:30 PM.
