Assemblymember Rudy Salas (D-Bakersfield) was joined by Kings County Sheriff David Robinson and Corcoran Police Chief Reuben P. Shortnacy at the Kings County Sheriff’s Office to announce and unveil plans for public safety infrastructure projects in Kings County made possible by funding secured by Salas in the 2018-19 state budget.

Assemblymember Rudy Salas assisted the Kings County Sheriff's Department and the Corcoran PD in obtaining funding for a pair of projects, including a new headquarters for the sheriff's office.
Assemblymember Rudy Salas assisted the Kings County Sheriff's Department and the Corcoran PD in obtaining funding for a pair of projects, including a new headquarters for the sheriff's office.

Of the total $8.7 million included in the budget, Kings County will receive $7 million for a new sheriff’s headquarters, and the City of Corcoran will receive $1.7 million for the completion of a new police facility.

“Working together with Sheriff Robinson and Chief Shortnacy, we brought home a crucial investment to keep our neighborhoods and communities safe,” said Salas. “The new state-of-the-art facilities will serve families in the region for decades to come. This is truly a breakthrough for community relationships and public safety services in the Valley.”

“In its 125 years the Kings County Sheriff’s Office has only resided in two permanent locations, the original jail – ‘The Bastille’ – and its current location on Lacey Blvd where it has been since 1964,” said Kings County Sheriff Robinson. “Assemblyman Salas went through great effort to secure $7 million in the state budget this year to build a new Sheriff’s Office. Assemblyman Salas is a strong supporter of Kings County law enforcement and is a proven leader in helping keep our community and families safe.”

Among the many benefits the new sheriff’s headquarters will provide, it will include a large community room, open to the public and available for use by members of the community and other law enforcement partners. The building design also consists of an area which will double as a heating and cooling center for the transient and the homeless to use.

“This is the second time in recent years that Assemblyman Salas has come through for Kings County law enforcement,” said Corcoran Police Chief Shortnacy. “The $1.7 million dollars in this budget will finish a desperately needed police facility for the Corcoran Police Department. The City has been working on this project for nearly ten years, and because of Assemblyman Salas’ efforts, this project is now a reality. We are grateful to have a long-term solution that will help keep our community and neighborhoods safe. Assemblyman Salas continues to be a fervent supporter of law enforcement in Kings County."

In 2015, Salas secured $5 million for public safety infrastructure projects in Kings County, including nearly $4 million dollars for the City of Corcoran police facility. The City of Corcoran was working for over three years to secure the remaining funding necessary to replace the current Corcoran Police Department public safety facility that is over 75 years old. With the additional funding secured this year, the project now is fully funded.

At the press conference, Kings County Supervisor Richard Valle and Corcoran Mayor Raymond Lerma joined Salas, Robinson, and Shortnacy in speaking about the benefits the projects will bring to our communities. The project designs were also unveiled to the public, and Salas presented a ceremonial check of $8.7 million to Kings County and the City of Corcoran.
