Sheriff's Water Rescue Unit warns recreational users away from high rivers

The Kings County Sheriff’s Office and its Water Rescue Unit (WRU) patrol operation promise to be busy this spring and summer thanks to an emergency proclamation dealing with high flows on the Kings River.

The Kings County Emergency Services director, thanks to an abundance of winter and spring rainfall, has closed the Kings River for recreational uses including the parks adjacent to the river.

The Sheriff's Department's Water Rescue Unit Patrol boats will begin operations on the river and other waterways this week in Kings County. They will patrol the waterways seeking violations and counseling recreational users.

The primary responsibility and mission of the WRU will be to contact, educate, cite, and potentially arrest persons using Kings County waterways for recreational purposes. There will be an emphasis on safe boating enforcement this year. The water rescue unit will issue warnings, but also citations and make arrests as necessary, especially in the area of unsafe boating and alcohol involved incidents.
