America and Lemoore remember those terrible and tragic days 18 years ago

As families and others gathered in New York City and other locations around the country to remember that September 11, 2001 morning 18 years ago, the Lemoore Volunteer Fire Department helped to remind Lemoore residents that nearly 3,000 people died that bright September morning, the result of a terrorist attack.

Lemoore volunteers raised their American flag on Wednesday, and it flew majestically at the intersection of Fox and C streets.

Yes, it has been 18 years since terrorists hijacked airplanes and brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The commemoration of "ground zero" is an annual rite of passage. Every year, family members and others gather at the rebuilt site and recite the names of those who died that fateful day. Similar services were held at the Pentagon where a hijacked jet slammed into the Pentagon killing 184 victims, including Lemoore's Otis Tolbert, a Navy officer killed that day.
