After two years of the Freshwater Pro, held at Lemoore’s Surf Ranch, Brazil continues to dominate the men’s division as Gabriel Medina, who usually excels in the ocean, proved that he could manage just as well in a body of water free from sharks and other saltwater foils.
American Lakey Peterson brought home the gold for the United States winning the women’s division as she outlasted several challengers in the finals. She scored well on the final day, picking up 18.03 points in the finals.
For the second straight year, Brazil’s best surfer took the top prize Saturday at Surf Ranch’s Freshwater pro. He defeated yet another Brazilian, Filipe Toledo, in Saturday’s final. Medina enjoys Surf Ranch and its mechanical waves. He won the inaugural Surf Ranch event a year ago.
Medina is a two-time world champion, and Saturday’s victory gives him two World Surf League titles in the last three outings.
Medina confirmed his second Lemoore win in a row by riding the waves nearly perfectly. He earned a two-wave total of 18.86 points to outdistance his challengers.
