Kings County health officials say first COVID-19 variants have appeared in local populace

Kings County’s public health officials say the first COVID-19 Delta variants have popped up in the county’s populace. The State’s Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) identified three Delta variant cases through whole-genome sequencing.

The Delta variant now accounts for 35.6% of COVID-19 samples analyzed, making it the dominant variant in California.

“We have come to a crossroads in the COVID-19 pandemic as we attempt to return to some semblance of normalcy and the emergence of the variants are of concern,” said Nichole Fisher, R.N., Nursing Division Manager for the Kings County Department of Public Health (KCDPH). “Communities with low vaccination rates throughout the US, and the world, are seeing sharp increases in cases as the new, more contagious strains become widespread.”

KCDPH officials continue to stress the importance of wearing a face-covering when indoors in public buildings or businesses and when in outdoor crowds for individuals who are not fully vaccinated. For those fully vaccinated and who consider themselves to be at high risk for illness from COVID-19, precautions should be taken, and wearing a face-covering when in public settings should be considered.

COVID-19 vaccines continue to be available for Kings County residents 12 and older that desire to receive one, and appointments are available at www.vaccines.gov or https://myturn.ca.gov/, or by calling (833) 422-4255.

Individuals experiencing COVID-19 symptoms should contact their health care provider to get tested and immediately isolate themselves until cleared to protect others. Residents are urged to get vaccinated and continue practicing physical distancing, washing their hands frequently, and wearing face coverings.

Additionally, it is imperative to speak with contact tracing representatives from KCDPH when contacted to help limit the spread of the very infectious COVID-19 variants.
