West Hills College to host free workshop Oct. 29 on unique registration program

From West Hills College

West Hills Community College District will host a free workshop on Oct. 29 to provide a unique look at its innovative Reg365 program, which allows students to register for a full year’s worth of classes in advance.

The program was recognized by the State of California earlier this year when West Hills became one of only 14 colleges statewide to win a California Innovation Award for Higher Education, and the $2.5 million award that came with it.

Now, representatives from colleges around the state will get an inside view of the process behind developing the program and lessons learned from the enrollment redesign, presented by WHCCD staff who were part of the process. Participants will also receive a copy of a “how to” manual developed by WHCCD, which outlines the process of launching and creating Reg365.

“The implementation guide is intended to assist other colleges,” said Dr. Stuart Van Horn, WHCCD Vice Chancellor of Educational Services and Workforce Development. “The guide captures how Reg365 all came together, what we learned, what challenges we faced, and how we solved them. It is intended for colleges interested in replicating our innovation.”

So far, nearly 100 individuals have registered to attend the workshop and additional seats were added to the original registration limit to account for demand after seats for the workshop quickly sold out. An additional workshop is being planned for early spring.

Since the award, interest in the program has been high. Van Horn and District Chancellor Dr. Frank Gornick recently helmed a presentation on Reg365 at the national conference of the Association of Community College Trustees which was one of the more popular events at the gathering. Another presentation will be held at the upcoming Community College League of California convention in November.

The upcoming free Reg365 workshop on Oct. 29 will be held at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Sequoia and Sycamore Rooms.
