Assemblymember Rudy Salas, who presents the Valley and Lemoore, was given the nod to take over the Assembly’s “New Democrats” caucus. Assemblymember Henry Perea, of Fresno, announced the election of Salas and Assemblyman Jim Cooper as the co-leaders of the moderate Democrats group.

Perea announced recently that he was stepping down from the Assembly.

The three assemblymembers announced the new leaders of the New Democrats (Mod Dems). The new leadership will be effective immediately.

“It has been an honor to serve as the convener of The New Democrats over the past several years. The New Democrats have worked hard to make California a better place to live and do business in,” said Perea. “I’d like to thank my colleagues for allowing me to lead them in the legislature."

"First, I want to thank Assemblymember Perea for his leadership and service. I am honored and humbled with the leadership opportunity my colleagues have provided me as we continue the fight for hard working Californians" said Assemblymember Salas.

The New Democrats (Mod Dems) are an informal caucus that is socially progressive and fiscally responsible. They aim to represent the majority of Californians who view themselves as political moderates.
