West Hills Foundation continues to accept applications for scholarships through March 1

From West Hills College

The West Hills Community College District Foundation is accepting applications now through March 1 for general scholarships and the President’s Scholar program.

West Hills College Coalinga, West Hills College Lemoore and the North District Center, Firebaugh, all have scholarships available for the 2015-2016 academic year. Some scholarships are campus specific, but several are offered district wide.

“Thanks to the support of our very generous donors, we have many scholarships to offer students that help pay some or all of their college expenses,” said Frances Squire, Executive Director of the West Hills Community College Foundation. “Our application is very simple and can be completed online and printed, signed and mailed or delivered to our campus financial aid office.”

Scholarship descriptions and instructions for applying are listed on the Foundation webpage: www.westhillscollege.com/district/foundation/scholarships. Applications can be downloaded from the website and must be submitted prior to March 1 for consideration.

Scholarships offered include the Bernard Osher Scholarship. There are 32 of these in amounts of up to $1,000 each. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must have completed at least 24 units applicable to their degree.

Other scholarships include the Mouren Family Endowed Scholarship, which was established in honor of Howard Mouren, whose family pioneered farming in the Coalinga/Huron area. This $1,000 scholarship is available to a student majoring in agriculture at West Hills College Coalinga.

At West Hills College Lemoore, students majoring in engineering are eligible for free tuition and $600 a semester for books for up to 70 units.

A number of scholarships are also available for veterans including three Ed Marco Veteran’s Scholarships at $1,200 per year each.

"Almost 200 students received a scholarship during our awards process for the current year with scholarships valued at up to $500,000 awarded,” Squire said. “I encourage anyone who plans to attend West Hills during the 2016-2017 academic year to apply."

The largest district-wide scholarship is the President’s Scholar Program, which is offered to high school seniors with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher and four semesters of California Scholarship Federation eligibility. Included is free tuition for two years and $250 per semester for books and priority registration.
