Reef Sunset, West Hills partnership brings modern science lab to Avenal High

From West Hills College

Thanks to a partnership between the West Hills Community College District and the Reef Sunset Unified School District, students at Avenal High School now have access to state of the art, modernized science labs.

A ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the new Shirley Hodges Science and Technology Center will be held at Avenal High School on June 2 at 4 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

“We want to thank the community of Avenal for their support of this project,” said Dr. Frank Gornick, Chancellor of the West Hills Community College District. “West Hills College is committed to the citizens our community and the students we serve and this is just one more way to serve them.”

WHCCD’s contribution to this project was made possible by the passing of Measure E in 2008, which generated an approximate $18.34 million in funding.

WHCCD provided $2 million toward upgrading the science laboratories at the school, funding the remodel of two existing science labs, storage and prep rooms. The complete remodel improved the lab design to allow for maximum collaboration between students and instructors, including complete co-laboratories and lecture space.

Adjacent restrooms and the main entrance were also remodeled to meet current ADA standards.

Utilizing the new labs, WHCCD is also planning to offer evening or weekend college-level courses at Avenal High School.
