A canned food drive turned into something special for a bunch of wide-eyed kids and their parents, who brought canned food and kids to the Lemoore Stadium Cinemas in exchange for movie tickets and a chance to win an exclusive Christmas gift.
All this was courtesy of the Kings Lions Club, which on Saturday hosted its annual “Movies with Santa,” the only admission, a can of food.
There are two beneficiaries of the 1,200 or so cans of food that these kids delivered Saturday morning: God’s Bread Basket and Lemoore Christian Aid, both Lemoore-based organizations.
About 300 kids and parents got to watch “The Star” in the Stadium Cinemas before retreating to the Downtown Arbor just across the street where Santa and Mrs. Clause stood waiting to greet them with gifts.
With tickets in hand, Santa read out its number as excited youngsters retrieved a gift from Santa. Santa, by the way, eschewed his regular red jacket for a more colorful coat, but managed to get out a few “ho, ho hos.”
Anastasia Escalera organized this year’s “Movies with Santa.” Lions Club members passed out about 35 gifts ranging from basketballs and games to bicycles.
