Lemoore’s top tennis player, Spencer Denney, came within a point of beating the league’s top singles player but had to settle for second place after losing in a tiebreaker to Redwood’s Tony Kim.

The Tigers, thanks to their second-place team finish, will open the playoffs against West Yosemite League foe Mt. Whitney on Tuesday in Visalia. Match time is 3:30 p.m. The Tigers finished an impressive 11-2 in league play, just a game behind Redwood at 12-1. Overall the Tigers are 14-8.

“We earned a No. 2 spot in the playoffs,” said Tiger Coach Carla Bow. “We have a bye this week.”

In the WYL championships, held Friday in Visalia, Spencer lost to Kim 6-1, 4-6 (12-14) in probably the most exciting match of the vent.

In other action, Earl Magno took third in a tiebreaker 8-7 (7-2).

Previous action

Lemoore’s vaunted boys’ tennis team continued its winning streak with a pair with three straight West Yosemite League victories this past week and just about assured themselves of a top seed in upcoming playoff action.

The wins included a 5-4 decision over Mt. Whitney Tuesday (April 17), a 6-3 victory at El Diamante on Wednesday, and finally a 9-0 whitewashing of Golden West on Thursday afternoon at Lemoore.

Lemoore improved to 9-2 in the WYL and trail only powerful Redwood in the league standings. The Tigers have two remaining contests left, a Monday matchup with Golden West on the Tigers home court and the league finale at Hanford on Wednesday.

In Thursday’s drubbing of the Trailblazers, all Tigers were locked and loaded as they crushed Golden West 9-0. Leading the way once again was Spencer Denney, a 6-1, 6-0 winner. Earl Magno, Collin Bresenio, Matthew Crisci were all equally impressive, easily dispatching their Trailblazer opponents.

In singles play Marjaby Bresenio faced perhaps the most robust match, losing his first set 4-6 before winning 6-1 and then capturing the win with a 10-7 tiebreaker.

Magno and Bresenio joined forces to win their doubles match 8-1 while the team of Matthew Crisci and Marjaby Bresenio won 8-1. Chris Avalos and Blake Nunes were 8-1 winners too, ensuring the Tigers a sweep.
