Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Sanger), who also represents Kings County, in the 14th State Senate District, was assigned as Chair of the Human Services Committee for the 2019 – 2020 Legislative session.

As an advocate in the Central Valley for growing opportunities in upward mobility, Senator Hurtado will guide the committee on issues including child welfare services, CalWorks, developmental disability services and more.

Recently announced by California Senate President pro Tempore, Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), Senator Hurtado has also been designated to the Health, Veterans Affairs, Budget and Fiscal Review, and Governance and Finance Committee. Moreover, the Senator was appointed to join other legislative colleagues in overseeing the Budget Subcommittee #3 on Health and Human Services.

“I am honored and thankful for the opportunity Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins has provided to the Central Valley,” stated Senator Hurtado. “With healthcare being a top priority in the 14th Senate district, the Central Valley continues to face multiple challenges which includes limited access to affordable health and human services,” continued Senator Hurtado. “These basic human rights are imperative to ensuring that we create a foundational launch pad for families throughout our community. For this reason, I look forward to serving in these committees.”

The designated committee chairs, vice chairs and membership will be formally adopted today by the Senate as the Legislature begins its 2019 – 2020 session.
