Bringing Lemoore's pioneers back to life with Sarah Mooney's 'Legends of Lemoore Cemetery Walk'
Would-be Lemoore historians may recognize some of the local actors, some hailing from The Kings Players and long-time museum volunteers. Tom Buford and Lynda Lahodny are tackling the roles of, E.G. and El Lena Henley. “I am so honored to portray El Lena,” said Lahodny. “She and her husband, E.G., led amazing lives and contributed so much to our community. What I enjoy most about our annual event is learning more about the very early history of Lemoore. I was fortunate to spend many hours with E.G. and El Lena’s grandson, Darryl Henley,” she continued.
“Darryl is 80 years old and has made several trips from his home in Dos Palos to share family stories and donate family artifacts and photos to the Mooney Museum. There is nothing better than getting the story first-hand.”

According to the museum’s president and event chair, Mike Betcher, the event couldn’t be held without its board members and volunteer actors. “We couldn’t produce our event without the assistance of Louella Moreland, who does the casting and works with the actors; Bill Black and Stephen Emanuels, who select and research the characters." The Lemoore High School NJROTC is also helping out with the logistics.
Betcher added that the volunteers provide brief introductions of the historical characters. This event is not intended to be ‘spooky,’ but rather, a factual and fascinating look at Lemoore’s past through the eyes of those who created that history.
Betcher is taking on a roll too. He is excited about his turn as “Doc Bill” Byron, who practiced medicine in Lemoore from 1906-1951. He was a true “horse and buggy doctor” who delivered thousands of babies, affectionately referred to as “Doc Bill’s babies.”
Event tickets are $15 per person and must be purchased in advance at Ramblin’ Rose or the Lemoore Recreation Department. One can opt for the 9 a.m. or the 11 a.m. tour. Seating is provided at each gravesite. For more information, call 589-9667.
