Central Valley Rep. TJ Cox (CA-21) announced this week the introduction of a resolution he is co-leading with Hawaii Rep. Ed Case in the U.S. House of Representatives to designate October 2019 as “Filipino American History Month." The resolution is intended to honor the rich history and culture of Filipino Americans and celebrate their significant contributions to the United States.

There is a significant Filipino American presence in the Central Valley, including Lemoore.

“As a Filipino American and one of 20 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) members of Congress, I am excited to co-sponsor this resolution celebrating Filipino American History Month. This is a special opportunity to celebrate the rich history, culture, and continuing contributions of my fellow Filipino Americans to our great nation,” said Cox.

He went on to say that Filipino communities are especially active in California’s Central Valley. Two of the most consequential labor leaders of the last century, Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, both Filipino Americans, organized migrant workers in the Central Valley, improving lives for generations of working families,” stated Cox. “I hope you join me in reflecting on and celebrating the contributions of my fellow Filipino Americans in October and every month.”

In Hawaii, the Fil-Am community has come so far and contributed so much in its more than 100 years since the Sakadas first arrived from the Philippines, stated Case. “So many men and women of Filipino heritage, both in the islands and across our country, have built a foundation of hard work and commitment through generations in excelling in many fields of endeavor, from the government to business, education and the arts, and beyond. October is an opportunity for all Americans to join in learning about and celebrating the long history and deep culture of Filipino Americans that have contributed so much to the diverse fabric of our country,” he added.
