Near the end of the December 6 Lemoore City Council gathering, the city's elected leadership chose current Mayor Pro Tem Patricia Matthews as the city's new mayor, replacing  Stuart Lyons after his two-year term as mayor ended this month.

Council members also elected longtime West Hills College Chancellor Frank Gornick Mayor Pro Tem.

Matthews, who currently represents Lemoore's District E, was elected to the council in 2020 and begins her next two years as mayor upon her selection. Only two other women had served as Lemoore's mayor before Matthews got the nod on January 6. The last female mayor was Lois Wynne, who served from 2014 to 2016. And before her, Barbara Wyckoff served one term from 1986 through 1988.

The new mayor and council won't meet again until January after canceling its regular December 20 meeting.
