While the COVID-19 virus continues to linger, local school officials are determined to prevent it from interfering with another school year.  Instead, according to Kings County Superintendent of Schools Todd Barlow, students will return to the classroom in force – and without masks, if they so choose.

Both of Lemoore’s two main school districts are prepared to open this week. Lemoore Elementary District’s first day of school is Monday, August 8, while Lemoore High School opens its doors to students on August 10. The district’s Jamison High opens its doors on August 9.

“We have 13 independent school districts and over 60 school sites in Kings County, and I know I speak for all of our teachers, administrators, and support staff when I say we are excited to see our students back in the classroom,” said Barlow.

However, there are some caveats. For example, school employees who are unvaccinated for COVID-19 must undergo testing at least once weekly. And while universal masking is not required in schools at this time, there are no immediate plans to change this.

“In regard to testing, my suggestion to our local districts is to provide take-home tests to unvaccinated staff and any vaccinated staff who wants them,” said Barlow.

Barlow added that agencies may implement stricter protocols for wearing masks, but there is no indication that local schools will do so.  “So, students can wear masks, but they are not required,” he added.

School employees who remain unvaccinated for COVID must undergo testing at least once weekly, stated the California Department of Public Health.

“In regard to testing, my suggestion to our local districts is to provide take-home tests to unvaccinated staff and to any vaccinated staff who wants them,” said Barlow

“As far as masking is concerned, agencies may implement stricter protocols, but there is no indication that local schools will do so.  So, students can wear masks, but they are not required,” added Barlow.

Kings County school officials already have a stockpile of tests courtesy of California health officials. “In fact,” added Barlow,  “We just received ten pallets of tests yesterday morning.  However, the CDPH is working on a way to allow school districts to order over-the-counter tests as needed directly.

“I would just reiterate that education is a partnership between students, parents, and the schools.” Said Barlow, a Lemoore High School graduate.  “Schools need to facilitate parent involvement.  We hope parents take those opportunities to become involved, even if it's just meeting the teachers.  It takes time and effort, but we're all in this together, and our children are worth it.”
