Emerging role of China topic of latest West Hills College "Essential Elements" conference

From West Hills College

California’s leading experts on the diverse but interconnected topics of water, food, agribusiness, and transportation will gather in Coalinga on Nov. 6 to discuss the emerging role of China in regional trade and the potential impact on the area’s economy.

The San Joaquin Valley is a major agribusiness global trading hub and U.S. logistics management center. The conference goal is to determine emerging trends and events and to develop actions that will help use this information to create good-paying jobs in one of the nation's largest disadvantaged areas. The event features panel discussions and live video feeds.

It’s the third in a series sponsored by West Hills Community College District, called Essential Elements, entitled: “Trading Partners: Export Evolution, Logistics and Valley Economic Development.” It will be held at the Harris Ranch Inn and Conference Center. The event begins at 8 a.m. and adjourns at 6 p.m. after a hosted reception. Lunch is also provided.

According to Stuart Van Horn, vice chancellor of educational services and workforce development at WHCCD, participants will discuss trade and logistics related to exports, goods, water and job creation.

“These are timely topics as they relate to the continued expansion of the Panama Canal and its impact on California routes, rails and roads,” said Van Horn.

Agencies represented at the event include Beacon Economics, Farm Bureau Federation, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, California Water Board, Paramount Farming, San Joaquin Valley Winegrowers Association, CSU Fresno Community and Economic Development, American Journal of Transportation, California Department of Transportation, Port of Long Beach, Kings River Conservation District, California Forward, UC Davis World Food Center and Union Pacific Railroad.
