Lemoore Middle College High School takes top honors at Kings County Academic Decathlon

This year’s theme for the Academic Decathlon was “New Alternatives in Energy: Ingenuity and Innovation.”
Lemoore High School, with a history of first-place finishes, took third place Saturday with 29,477 points while Hanford High finished fourth and Hanford West fifth. Cororan took second place. Avenal High checked in at sixth place while Sierra Pacific finished seventh overall.
But the star of the day had to be Zachary Osterland from Middle College High School who was named the event’s top decathlete. Osterland took top honors and was awarded $125 scholarships in several disciplines including music, science, art, economics, and speech. In addition to $125 schoarships in each category, Osterland earned $1,000 scholarship for being named the top decathlete.
The Middle College High School also won the vaunted Super Quiz with 3,675 points.
The winner now advances to the State Academic Decathlon competition in Sacramento in March.
Other local winners included Alexandra Osterland in language and literature and Cassidy Moore in the essay competition. From Lemoore High School, Alanis Rupprecht was named the top student and earned a $250 scholarship.
The team is coached by Allen Tong, a teacher at Middle College High School.
