Lemoore’s varsity boys’ basketball team is just a win away from becoming the second varsity boys’ team to go undefeated in the West Yosemite League. All the Tigers have to do is get by Hanford in the league finale on Wednesday night. The game will be played in Bullpup territory, and it’s not likely to be a cakewalk.

The two teams last played January 23 in a thrilling come-from-behind game played in the Event Center. The Tigers used some key shooting in the final minutes to beat the Bullpups 57-52 to keep their unbeaten string alive.

Lemoore’s vaunted football team went 11-0 in the recent football campaign, the Tigers only loss to Dinuba in the second round of the Central Section Division II playoffs. The basketball team is currently 11-0 heading into Hanford. The Tigers are 19-5 overall.

As it is, Lemoore’s varsity boys’ team  clinched a tie for the league championship with a very convincing 85-38 blowout of visiting Golden West Friday night in the Event Center.

In Friday’s matchup, the Trailblazers were in the game for about eight minutes, emerging from the initial period trailing by just 19-12. At one point the Blazers held a brief 2-point advantage, but that was the last time.

Sparked by Al Perryman’s seven first-quarter points, and five from Jaylunn English, the Tigers quickly wore down the less-athletic Trailblazers. Perryman finished with nine points in the first half and 12 overall while English led the Tigers with 17, including a one-handed dunk early in the second period. He was fouled on the play and converted on the free throw for a 28-16 lead.

From that point on the Tigers were relentless. Jerald Campbell’s basket and free throw gave Lemoore a 31-18 lead midway through the second period. It was about at that point, that forward Spencer Sterling took over, scoring seven straight points on a 3-pointer, an inside assist from Perryman, and a short jumper as Lemoore went up 38-18. He finished with nine in the quarter and 13 overall.

The Tigers scored 34 in the quarter to run up the score to 53-24. They didn’t let up in the second half, forcing a mercy rule in the fourth period that kept the clock running.
