West Hills College Lemoore awarded a record number of degrees Thursday at its annual commencement ceremony. An estimated 838 degrees and certificates were awarded to 642 students, with nearly 300 students attending the ceremony. Some 100 students received multiple degrees.

A number of Lemoore High grads distinguished themselves in the commencement.

Commemorating over what is probably his final commencement was West Hills College Lemoore President Don Warkentin. The long-time president will retire in December after a long distinguished career in education that culminated with his stewardship of the new Lemoore campus.

“This past year our Student Services teams have been working diligently with students to follow their Educational Plans, utilize Priority Registration, and monitor student progress,” said Warkentin. “All this has contributed to a significant increase in degrees and certificates this year.”

The graduates ranged in age from 17 to 65, including six local high school seniors who received their associate’s degrees.

Warkentin announced earlier this year that he would retire was the keynote speaker. Warkentin has been president of the college since 2004.

“I have to give you some words of wisdom that I got from my father,” said Warkentin, a military veteran, in his speech. “Always listen to your sergeants. Before you make critical decisions or think you know everything, listen. Listen to those around you who can offer the best advice.”

Kimberlie Raulino, this year’s Student Government Association Commissioner of Clubs, was the student speaker.

Two students, Jennifer Gudgel and Jessica Kristenson, gave a musical performance during the event. The two sang the song “For Good” from the musical Wicked.

During the ceremony, Edna Ivans, Nick Ivans and Gary Sedgwick were honored. All three had previously been awarded the Spirit of the Eagle Award, which recognizes service and dedication to the school. Nick Ivans and Sedgwick were honored posthumously.
