Kings Christian lost its first football game in two years Friday night as they fell just short in a 26-20 loss to visiting Anza from San Juan Batista. The Crusaders hope to rebound this Friday when they host Cuyama Valley High School in another 7 p.m. matchup.

After giving up a first-quarter touchdown and blocking the extra point, Kings Christian fell behind early 6-0. But they rebounded in the second period when Crusader quarterback Andrew Tackett found a streaking Alex Gutierrez for a 26-yard touchdown.

The Crusaders scored on a 2-point conversion for an 8-6 lead.

Anza took the lead in the second period, but in the second half Andrew Tackett and Maiya Garcia teamed up for a 38-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead. Tackett later scored on a 38-yard touchdown run as Lemoore led 20-18.

Anza scored early in the fourth period. The Crusaders had an opportunity to win with minutes left, but failed to get it into the end zone.

“I’m actually very pleased,” said Crusader Coach Cameron Brooks. “At the end of the game we had a chance to win. Our boys grew a lot.”
