Lemoore high schools take top two spots at annual Kings Academic Decathlon

Lemoore’s two high schools finished No. 1 and No. 2 in the Kings County Academic Decathlon, the conclusion of which was held Saturday afternoon in the Lemoore High School cafeteria. Judging by the final results, the winners were no doubt decided well before the conclusion of the Decathlon’s concluding event, the Super Quiz.

Students from high schools from throughout Kings County (Lemoore High School, Lemoore Middle College High School, Hanford High, Hanford West, Corcoran, and Avenal) competed over two weekends for the county’s top academic prize.

But it was the venerable Lemoore Middle College High School that won again, amassing a total of 49,392.7 points, which included a Super Quiz win. Lemoore High School finished second overall with 34,680.9 points.

Once again, it was an Osterland, Alexandra Osterland, to be exact, a Middle College student, who was named the Decathlon’s top decathlete. Other top students also emerged from Middle College as Ozzy Bellwood, and Daniela Garcia were honored as top students.

Third place went to Corcoran High with 32,036 points while Hanford West and Hanford were fourth and fifth respectively. Sierra Pacific and Avenal were sixth and seventh overall.

Middle College High School also won the 2015 Academic Decathlon. This year 116 students from throughout Kings County began the competition at Lemoore High on January 30 with competition and judging. On Saturday, competition continued which culminated with the Super Quiz at 2:30 p.m. The Super Quiz is an oral competition consisting of 36 questions.
