Lemoore Navy officials and law enforcement officials are still investigating an incident early Thursday morning after a California Highway Patrol pursuit that ended up on the air station resulted in the deaths of two persons and damage to one of the Navy's F/A Super Hornets.

Law enforcement officials still don't know why a vehicle, driven by Anthony Raymond Castillo, 29, of Campbell, and his female occupant, Melissa Marie Miller, 36, of San Jose, suddenly sped away as a CHP officer stopped by.

According to the CHP, it was about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night when an officer stopped to check on a Jeep Grand Cherokee parked on the side of Jackson Avenue in Kings County, close to Highway 41. Castillo, 29 and Miller, 36, suddenly sped away as the CHP officer followed. Castillo sped west on Jackson Avenue then jumped into the eastbound lanes of Highway 198 by driving the wrong way onto the freeway ramp.

He exited on to Lemoore Naval Air Station and drove past the main entrance, driving down Reeves Boulevard toward the secure operations area where the Navy's fighter jets are located. He entered the main operations area and struck the rear of an F/A-18E Super Hornet.

Both occupants were killed. Miller died at the scene while Castillo was taken to a hospital and died there.

A CHP helicopter continued to follow the vehicle as it passed through an entry point of the airfield on the operations side of the base and then crashed into an FA 18 fighter, about seven miles northwest of the base main entrance.
