Kings County fire crews were kept busy this weekend after a large vegetation fire was sparked late Friday near Lemoore Naval Air Station on the north side of Highway 198 near the Avenal Cutoff. According to news reports the fire burned more than 200 acres as of late Friday night.
Smoke could still be seen on Saturday emanating from the location, more specifically adjacent to the dry Kings River. No structures were in danger. By Saturday the fire was extinguished, but appeared to have jumped to the south side of Highway 198.
The charred vegetation was about a mile from NAS Lemoore base housing.
