A former City of Lemoore employee will throw his hat into what seems to be a crowded field for November’s city council election. Joe Simonson, who late last year was placed on administration leave by the city and later retired after receiving a $100,000 settlement, has pulled papers to run for council.

Why is he running after working at the city from 1993 to 2016, his last job as the city’s recreation director? “I have been involved with every community I have lived in, from San Diego to Oceanside to Laton and Lemoore,” said Simonson in an email to The Leader.

“I now have the time to dedicate myself to this endeavor and would be the only person who completely understands the packet, let alone read it, and apply ethics and critical thought process to it.”

Simonson retired on Feb. 29 after receiving a $100,000 payout for what he claimed was personal injury and emotional distress related to his being placed on administrative leave and other conduct by the city. Simonson was the subject of an investigation conducted by an outside investigator regarding allegations of misconduct.

The city opted to seal the investigation’s report regarding the allegations.

Simonson began his 23-year career with the city as a Senior Maintenance Worker in 1993 and was promoted to Public Works Superintendent in 2001. In 2008 he accepted his final position of Parks and Recreation Director.

Simonson told The Leader in his email that he’s basing his campaign on corruption and fiscal mismanagement, adding that he has a “documented body of work and a great track record,” helping to expose embezzlement by a former city finance official.

He also threatens to expose “even bigger flaws” in the system that will come to light as the process continues into October and November. “There is a lot that needs to be exposed, (and will be) whether I am elected or not,” he warned.
