Lemoore’s Middle College High School won its fifth Kings County Academic Decathlon in a row Saturday afternoon at Sierra Pacific High School. It took about an hour before Kings County Department of Education officials tallied the results and declared Middle College the champion.

The team is coached by Allen Tong, a teacher at Lemoore’s Middle College High School, currently housed on the West Hills College Lemoore campus. His talented squad amassed 41,904.30 points to win the 35th Annual Kings County Academic Decathlon.

Lemoore High School, coached by Frances Bracamonte, an English teacher at the comprehensive high school, finished second, totaling some 33,034 points.

In the last 10 years of the Kings County Academic Decathlon, a Lemoore school has won the top title nine of 10 times. The only Kings County school to break into the select group was Corcoran in 2010.

"These students received the curriculum last July and went through some rigorous preparation," said the team's teacher, Allen Tong. "They sacrificed several days of the Christmas break, many after school review sessions, and speech practice sessions. These last three weeks have been particularly strenuous, but it was well worth it."

In the 35-year history of the Academic Decathlon, Lemoore High School has dominated the county competition.

This year’s Super Quiz theme was World War II.

Teams from Avenal High School, Corcoran High School, Hanford High School, Hanford West High School, Lemoore High School, Lemoore Middle College High School, and Sierra Pacific High School (a total of 73 students) competed in a rigorous set of academic examinations demonstrating their versatility in a variety of academic categories.  Each team is comprised of “A”, “B” and “C” students.
